Call me indecisive, but I changed my major five times in college. For some reason, I felt intimidated by Anatomy especially. After changing my major once to avoid this class, I finally realized that all the majors I was interested in required me to take Anatomy and so I signed up for the dreaded class. During that semester, I found out that I really enjoyed and excelled in Anatomy and I even went on to become a Teachers Assistant. I also took other classes like Genetics, Biochemistry, and Organic Chemistry and found out that when I brought my work ethic to any class, I could learn and master the material. As a result of my own personal education journey, I want to help students gain confidence at a young age that they can learn and overcome obstacles.
During my time at BYU, I taught intro to science classes (Physical Science 100) for over two years and I also taught Anatomy for a semester. I lectured for crowds of over 300 students and tutored some students one on one. Most of the time my classes were 20-30 students. These experiences taught me many powerful lessons of how to reach different people.
I graduated with a BS in 2009 with my husband who received his masters degree, and my ten month old baby girl (see above photo). Prior to graduation, I was interviewed to speak at my college convocation and the Dean wanted to know my plans for after graduation. I told him I wanted to stay home with my daughter and raise her and he let me know I was not longer a candidate to speak because I wasn't going to medical school. I can still remember the thoughts and feelings that I so powerfully wanted to share with others about how mothers and women can make a difference in this world, regardless of their level of education or employment status. Although I didn't get to share those words at my graduation, I want to share those words through the life I live.
Finally, I love these students and I greatly enjoy teaching and connecting with students of all ages. It's a privilege to share what I have learned with others!
I created this science program in the fall of 2023 because I could sense a need for my homeschooled children to have in-person science classes with other students. I wanted them to create friendships, feel accountable, and also gain confidence in some of my favorite subjects. It has been such a wonderful experience that I have opened up my classes to more students and I have found there is a need for this type of class for many families.
